Ever since I discovered the music of Mudville, the New York downtempo duo of Marilyn Carino and Ben Rubin–back in the 2000s, I’ve been a fan of Marilyn’s distinctive velvet vocals, and her even more sinuous songwriting. My desire to create a music video for them became even more heightened as Marilyn pursued solo projects on her own– and now finally we got the chance to collaborate!
Mute is the first single off of her new album Sister. The song expresses the angst of a cultural transplant, her story of up and leaving downtown New York for the highlands of Scotland. At least that’s how I envision it. It’s a fairytale set in dark forests–both literal and metaphoric.
